In Conversation with Martin Parr at Hyde Park Picture House
On Monday the 20th October 2025 we had the absolute pleasure of hosting photographer and national treasure Martin Parr at the beautiful Hyde Park Picture House in Leeds. The evening marked the launch of Martin’s new autobiography, Utterly Lazy and Inattentive: Martin Parr in Words and Picture, a candid and witty look back over one of Britain’s most celebrated photographic careers.
Martin took us on a fascinating journey through his life and work, reflecting on everything from his early days photographing seaside towns to his time at the Magnum agency. His stories gave a rare insight into the ideas, missteps, and moments that have shaped his practice and his life.
Following Martins talk, our very own Daniel Wheeler joined Martin on stage for a Q&A, where we dug into martins practice a little and asked questions about how he got where he was, does camera gear matter (apparently not really) and how does Martin’s busy schedule as a photographer fit into his work at the Martin Parr Foundation in Bristol. The audience also had the chance to ask their own questions. The discussion touched on photography, teaching, the everyday, and how Martin continues to see the world with curiosity and wit.
Afterwards, guests gathered for a book signing hosted by our friends at Village Books. This gave people the opportunity to chat with Martin and grab a signed copy for themselves.
We’re so grateful to everyone who came along to make the evening so special, and to Hyde Park Picture House for providing the perfect setting, a true Leeds gem for film and photography lovers alike.
A huge thanks as well to Village Books for being part of the night and for their continued support of independent publishing and photographic culture in Leeds.
