Beginners Evening Course in Photography
Workshops focusing on how to start out making pictures, build projects and develop your practice as a photographer.
In this season of workshops we aim to support your photographic practice and give you tools to create work, build projects and expand your thinking around photography.
How do i creatively use a camera? Why do we make pictures? What is my subject? Where does my work sit within photography? How do i make a project? All of these questions and more we will covered during our sessions.
Our aim is that you will spend a focused amount of time thinking about your work, making pictures and getting support and critique from our your tutor; Daniel Wheeler. Daniel has taught extensively in further and higher education and is a practicing photographer. He has also ran his own workshops in photography and darkroom practice for over a decade.
Session 1 - Approaching Photography - Tuesday 17th November - 6pm-8pm
In this introductory session we will ask you to to bring some of your current work in print form to share with the group. We will give some input on both the contextual understanding of your work as well as support start to think about any technical issues you might be having so that we can resolve them in our next session.
This session is designed to be an ice breaker and an opportunity for everyone to get to know one another and for the tutors to introduce the series of workshops.
Session 2 - How To Make Pictures - Tuesday 1st December - 6pm-8pm
In this session we will deep dive into the technicalities of using cameras creatively. The aim with this session is to demystify things like aperture, shutter speed and ISO and make sure that you feel confident using your camera. The aim is that you can begin to consciously “Make” pictures, as apposed to snapping away and “Taking” pictures.
Session 3 - Ways of Making Work - Tuesday 15th December - 6pm-8pm
In this session we will taking about ways of approaching work. We will discuss how to create bodies of work. The art of “play” and the concept of image sequencing. We will also talk about the differences between collections of images and single images and how these approaches to making work differ.
This session is designed to inspire you to make work and give you some tools and skills to enable you to approach making work in a more constructive way. We will also be setting some “homework” in which we will individually set briefs for you to explore your practice.
Session 4 - Where does my work fit? - Tuesday 5th January - 6pm-8pm
In this session we will talk about the world of contemporary fine art photography as well as other art forms and discuss where in this world your work might fit. We will introduce the work of other photographers and talk about their reasons for making work and their approach to their practice. We will also discuss how you might progress your practice and develop your work and assess the pictures you have made since the last session.
Session 5 - Supporting your further practice - Tuesday 19th January - 6pm-8pm
In this session we will look at the work produced during the sessions in print form and talk about your practice after we finish. We will discuss possible avenues of exploration for your work and potential paths in career development. We will also briefly look at the Arts Council England Develop Your Creative Practice grant and see whether this might be something that could support your practice.
Session 6 - Exhibition Prep - Tuesday 2nd February - 6pm-8pm
That's right… Exhibition! In this session we will curate your show to the public. We decide on the scale of your works and how it is exhibited. We will then work with Alec Aarons at Fresh Aire to produce prints which we will pin up for our show.
Session 7 - Exhibition - Photo Social, Monday 15th February - 6pm-8pm
Invite your friends and family to a celebration of the fruits of your labor. An opportunity to share your work and get some feedback from your peers. Venue TBC
Terms & Conditions
The Course
This course consists of six evening workshop sessions, followed by a public exhibition and photo social. Each workshop runs from 6pm–8pm on the dates advertised.
The course is limited to a maximum of 10 participants.
By purchasing a ticket, you are booking a place on the complete six-session course, rather than individual workshops.
Minimum Enrolment
A minimum number of participants is required for the course to run.
If the minimum enrolment is not reached, Take It Easy Lab reserves the right to postpone or cancel the course. If this happens, participants will be offered either a full refund or the opportunity to transfer their booking to the rescheduled course.
Attendance
The course is designed as a progressive programme, with each session building on the previous one. We therefore strongly encourage participants to attend all six sessions.
If you are unable to attend a session, please let us know as soon as possible. Unfortunately, missed sessions cannot be transferred to another date and no partial refunds will be offered for sessions that you are unable to attend.
Please note that this course runs across the Christmas and New Year period. Please make sure you are able to attend the advertised dates before booking.
Exhibition and Photo Social
The final element of the course is a public exhibition and photo social, currently scheduled for Monday 15th February, 6pm–8pm. The venue will be confirmed during the course.
The exhibition is an important part of the programme and provides participants with an opportunity to share and present work developed during the course.
During Session 6, the group will work together to curate the exhibition and decide how the work will be presented. We will support participants in preparing their work for exhibition, including decisions around print size, sequencing and presentation.
Cameras and Equipment
Participants are responsible for providing their own camera or photographic equipment.
You do not need to own a dedicated camera to take part in the course. Participants are welcome to use:
- Film cameras
- Digital cameras
- Compact cameras
- Mobile phones
Cameras and other photographic equipment are not provided by Take It Easy Lab.
The course is designed to help you make better use of whatever camera you have available, rather than requiring you to purchase new equipment.
Film Processing and Printing
Participants will be asked to bring photographic prints or other examples of their work to sessions.
Take It Easy Lab can provide film processing and printing services, and course participants may be eligible for discounted services. Details of any available discounts will be provided during the course.
Any film, processing, printing, photographic paper or other materials purchased by participants are not included in the course fee unless specifically stated otherwise.
Independent Work
The course includes photographic activities and independent work between sessions.
Participants may be given individual briefs or exercises to explore between workshops. These are intended to help you develop your own photographic practice and get the most from the course.
There is no requirement to have an established photographic practice before joining the course.
Refunds and Cancellations
By purchasing a ticket, you are committing to the full six-session course.
Tickets are non-refundable if you subsequently decide that you are unable to attend, or if you miss individual sessions.
If you are unable to attend the course, you may contact Take It Easy Lab to discuss transferring your place to another person. Any transfer must be agreed with Take It Easy Lab in advance and cannot be guaranteed.
If Take It Easy Lab cancels or postpones the course, participants will be offered either a full refund or the opportunity to transfer their booking to the rescheduled course.
Changes to the Programme
Take It Easy Lab reserves the right to make reasonable changes to the course programme, tutor, venue or session content where necessary.
If significant changes are required, participants will be notified as soon as possible.
Group Participation
Take It Easy Lab aims to create a supportive, welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone taking part.
Participants are expected to treat tutors, staff and fellow participants with respect. The course involves sharing photographic work, ideas and creative opinions, so constructive and respectful discussion is encouraged.
Take It Easy Lab reserves the right to ask a participant to leave a session or withdraw from the course in cases of serious or repeated inappropriate, discriminatory, abusive or disruptive behaviour. In such circumstances, a refund will not normally be offered.
Ownership of Your Work
Participants retain ownership and copyright of photographs and other creative work they produce during the course.
By taking part in the exhibition, participants give Take It Easy Lab permission to display their work as part of the course exhibition.
Take It Easy Lab may also photograph or document the workshops and exhibition for its own promotional and archival purposes. Where individual participant work is to be used separately for promotional purposes, we will seek appropriate permission from the participant.
