We are delighted to be working with The Art House, Wakefield to bring you the Black and White Printing Masterclass. A two day workshop, running on the 11th and 12th April 2026

Explore the joys of the silver print!

In this two day workshop we will will learn everything you need to know about making black and white prints in the darkroom with master printer Daniel Wheeler. This workshop has been developed from Daniel’s years of teaching with renowned photographer, educator and darkroom practitioner John Blakemore.

    Day 1

On our first day together we will look at Daniels extensive archive of black and white prints from John Blakemore. This includes some of John’s prints, as well as Daniels and prints from Johns past students.
We will discuss print tonality and the malleability of darkroom materials. We will also discuss the dreaded ‘Zone System’ along with proper negative development and assessment.

After a lunch break Daniel will demonstrate some print techniques before we spend the rest of the afternoon looking at your own prints and negatives.
We will end the session assigning you an enlarger and getting you set up for day two…

    Day 2

Today we print! You will spend the day printing from your own negatives in the darkroom with the support and assistance of Daniel Wheeler and Arthouse darkroom tech and photographer Emily Ryalls.

During this session you will be encouraged to explore print tonality and push the boundaries of your darkroom practice. Please note that we are interested in quality, not quantity… you might find that you only work with 1-3 negatives during your print day… the aim is to make Master Prints.

We will finish the day looking at some basic archival toning methods and a hand spotting demo.

You will require developed negatives for the session. Some paper will be provided but feel free to bring your own.

Although this workshop is suitable for all levels of darkroom printer, we suggest that you have some experience using film & darkrooms to get the most from the experience. If you want to get your head around the basics, why not take part in our Black and White Darkroom Printing Workshop.

Please note, this is a two day event and attendees are expected to attend both days. When booking, simply select the 11th April option and this will allow you to attend on both the 11th and 12th for the full workshop.

    Location

This workshop is taking place at The Art House, Drury Ln, Wakefield WF1 2TE and NOT at our lab in Leeds.

    • Unless you don't want them, we will always send your negatives back. The postage is selected at checkout and is for us to return your negatives.

There is also an option for if you don't want the negatives back. If you select this we will destroy your film in a GDPR manner.

    • If we receive a parcel with film(s) in it and it doesn't have an order number with it, we won't know who it belongs to. We always post images of the parcel and film on our Instagram stories in the hope that the owner of said order sees this and can notify us of the order number.

Unfortunately if the order doesn't have an order number there is very little we can do, so if you think you've forgotten to include one when sending us film, please email us at hello@takeiteasylab.com with a full description of the package and film that was included.

    • Our Colour / B&W turnaround is usually within 4 working days of receipt of your order. E6/ECN-2 orders can be up to 1-2 weeks. Up-to-date turnaround times can be found in top header or on our Instagram.

    • Let’s really hope this never happens! But in the unfortunate case that it does, don’t worry, we’d never make you pay full price for this. We will happily refund the cost of the service, minus developing.

    • Once your files are delivered via Dropbox, we keep your files stored online for three months.

After three months these files are deleted, so make you sure move all folders out of our dropbox onto your own HD or storage!

We store physical orders / negatives at the lab for one month. These orders can be collected during weekdays while we are open. After one month these physical items will be destroyed in a GDPR compliant manner.

    • Yes we can. We can push your colour and black and white film up to 2 stops for no extra cost.

For black and white pushed film, this is done externally and will extend the turnaround time by a week or so.

    • Once we have processed your order, we use the email address you supplied on your order form to send the files via Dropbox. Make sure you check your spam folder too.

At checkout you have the option to receive your negatives back via post or you can collect them from our lab.
